BTU-TECH installs a new composite machinery: Pultrusion Profile Coiler and Uncoiler

Wind turbine blade manufacturers have been pushing the limits to make lighter, longer and more aerodynamic blades so that the turbines can harvest more energy from winds in a world where green energy needs to meet the world’s increasing demand. To make blades longer without any rigidity problem, blade designers incorporate carbon fiber or high modulus glass fiber forms in the sparcaps. For long years, dry multiaxial reinforcements were to be used in the moulds in the industry. Placing, a lot of times, more than 100 layers of reinforcements in a mould, competing with time and quality assurance criteria was a big challenge. So, now the industry is switching to use composite pultruded profiles to go into the moulds as several layers which saves a lot of layup time and also prevents possible dry fabric layup quality problems. As they want the fibers in the profile laminate to be continous along the sparcap length (which can be up to 100mt), the transport of that long profiles has been a technical problem to solve. BTU-TECH has become one of the few companies in the world who could address this problem. BTU-TECH Pultrusion Profile Coiler can coil the pultruded composite profile as a coil in the machine. This needs sophisticated control because the potential energy of a carbon pultruded profile in coil form of tens of meters length can be very dangerous if it uncoils without control. BTU-TECH design allows the same machine also to work as an uncoiler so that the blade manufacturer can uncoil the bobbin safely and under certain controls.
